A tree sheds its dead wood eventually, and it picks the moment. Usually that’s the first real wind after a wet spell.
Pruning ahead of that is the cheapest tree work there is.

Five kinds of cuts, chosen for the tree in front of us. Deadwood comes first.
Highest value
Deadwood removal
Anything dead, dying or broken comes out. This is the single highest-value thing you can do for a mature tree over a house or driveway.
Structural pruning
Young and middle-aged trees get shaped so they grow one strong leader instead of two competing stems. Two stems growing tight together is what splits in an ice storm.
Clearance
Limbs off the roof, off the gutters, out of the driveway, away from the service line to your house.
Thinning
Selective removal so wind passes through the canopy instead of pushing against it. Done properly this reduces the sail effect without stripping the tree.
Raising
Lower limbs off, so you can mow under it or see past it.
We don’t
top trees.
Topping means cutting the crown back to stubs. It’s still common and it’s still wrong. A topped tree responds by throwing out weak, fast-growing shoots attached to decaying stubs, and in five to ten years you have a bigger hazard than you started with, plus a tree that looks like a hat rack.
If a tree is genuinely too big for its spot, the honest answers are proper reduction pruning or removal. We’ll tell you which, and we’ll tell you if the answer is that you should leave it alone.

A few timing notes for this area. One rule overrides all of them: dead and hazardous wood comes out whenever you find it.
Most hardwoods
Ideal. The tree is dormant, the structure is visible with the leaves off, and it heals fast in spring.
Oaks
Best pruned in the dormant season rather than spring, to avoid attracting the beetles that spread oak wilt.
Overhanging limbs
Worth getting handled before ice season in December rather than after.
Dead & storm-damaged wood
Cleaned up immediately regardless of the calendar. There is no season for a dead limb over a driveway.

When trimming isn’t the answer
If a tree is sound but the limbs are in the wrong place, pruning is the better answer. We’ll say so rather than sell you a removal.
How often should a tree be pruned?
A healthy mature hardwood is generally fine every three to five years. A young tree benefits from lighter, more frequent structural pruning. Anything with deadwood over a structure should be looked at sooner.
Will pruning hurt the tree?
Done properly, no. Done badly, yes. The two things that damage trees are topping and removing too much live canopy at once. We take what needs to come off and leave the tree able to feed itself.
Can you just cut the limbs over my roof?
Yes, and that’s one of the most common jobs we do. We’ll also tell you if the rest of the tree needs attention, but the clearance work stands on its own.
My neighbor’s tree hangs over my property. What can I do?
In Virginia you can generally trim back to the property line, but it gets complicated fast, especially if the trimming would damage or kill the tree. Talk to your neighbor first. We’re happy to look at it and tell you what the tree can stand.
Do you clean up the brush?
Always. Chipped and hauled, and the yard raked before we go. It’s the thing our customers mention most.
Is trimming cheaper than removal?
Usually, and sometimes it solves the actual problem. If a tree is sound but the limbs are in the wrong place, pruning is the better answer. We’ll say so rather than sell you a removal.
